Latest Painting - going to Texas!

This is one of four panels that I recently finished as part of a commission request. This set is heading to Texas (not me, in case you were wondering from the title -- though I'd love to visit one day!), and is textured acrylic on gallery wrap canvas.

I used extra heavy duty canvas and stretcher bars, so each canvas ended up being about 10 pounds -- very sturdy indeed!

These were nice muted colors, and made me want to make a set for myself. It's nice having the option of changing your art in your home around every so often. I wonder if other artists do that as well?

This is a new abstract painting that I've just added to our art gallery. I'm fascinated with archaeology, and the artifacts that are uncovered from their buried resting places. It's no wonder that I'm drawn to creating semblances of these earthly treasures, whether man-made, or natural deposits, fossils and minerals.

This painting incorporates my signature fossil-texture in paint, with a deep red-garnet color. The background is slightly textured as well. This, coupled with a high gloss on this piece, gives it a nice depth -- something you would see when polishing a semi-transluscent stone.

This is another painting that I want to keep myself, so that's my own personal indicator of how I feel about its quality. But hey, that's just me -- you may not be into this kind of abstract painting, which is why I create different kinds! ;-)

This is my first un-commissioned painting this year! I've been working on several commissioned pieces, and wanted to create something new, so I created this 2 piece set.

I love textured art, and I decided to create an interesting background along with some textured paint. I love the way this came out, and like so many of my paintings, I wish I could keep it, lol!

But, I must share (must I?) - yes, ;-)

It's a great feeling when someone else shares my vision, and enjoys one of my paintings as much as I do. A bit narcissistic, true, but I believe that a painter needs to love his/her own work first, before anyone else does. Hope you enjoy it as well.... AJ

This is my latest painting - a LARGE, 3-piece abstract OIL painting!

That's right, I usually paint these large abstracts in acrylic because of the faster drying time, but decided to use oil on this one instead. I love working with oil paint, but dislike waiting for it to dry. This one will take about 2-3 weeks to dry before I can ship it out, but if you like it, don't wait it out-- someone else might get it! (If you want to be even MORE unique, check out the TEXTURED OIL paintings, which take about 3-5 weeks to dry before shipping -- definitely worth the wait!)

The overall size of this abstract is 6 feet wide by 3 feet high -- that's 18 square feet of color! The canvases are chunky: 1.5 inches deep gallery wrap, with the sides painted a dark raw umber, which creates a frame-like illusion.

The shapes within (and even the colors) may seem mild to the casual observer, but while painting, I envisioned them to contain explosive energy to be unleashed as needed. Hence its name...

'Zinfandel Sunset' painting completed (for Marriott Hotel)

So I finally finished this painting... Whew!!! I lost track of how many hours it took, but I'm happy with the end result!

Some facts about this painting:

I weighed the box containing the paint, and it weighed 50 pounds. I estimate that the empty tubes weighed about 5 pounds, so figure that there's approximately 45 pounds of oil paint on the canvas!

I used aluminum and aspen stretcher bars, with a special cross-bar reinforcement system to keep the entire painting lightweight and unaffected by changes in humidity. Using wood alone would have added dramatically to the overall weight, since a hardwood like oak or maple is very heavy!

This painting is abstract, and since it's representative of a sunset, it's considered a representational abstract painting.

The overall size of this single canvas, gallery wrap oil painting is 22 feet wide by 5.5 feet high (120 square feet).

The oil paint will take several months to dry enough to be able to be shipped to its destination, without damaging the textured oil. (No special solvents were used to speed the drying process, since they would interfere with the natural 'curing' of the oil paint.)

Oil paint dries by oxidation of the oil itself (much like the wearing down of our bodies, and why we are now always looking for 'antioxidants' in our food), whereas acrylic paint dries by evaporation.

If you've ever been to the Grand Canyon, you know how spectacular it is just to be there! Then, as you witness the sun setting, and feel the temperature cooling off, you can't help but to be blown away by the experience.

This is one of my humble impressions of such majestic beauty... I intentionally wanted to create a 'distressed' look to this painting, to invoke the feeling of 'being one' with the canyon itself.

Commissoned Abstract Painting for Marriott Hotel - 22 feet by 5.5 feet!

My latest commisson request is to create 2 textured abstract paintings for one of Marriott's Hotels here in the U.S.

One of them is a diptych (2 piece painting), with each one measuring approx. 2.5 feet by 3.5 feet. The other painting, however, is a tad larger:
a VERY LARGE 22 feet wide, by 5.5 feet high. That's 120 square feet of painting!

If you want to know how much paint I'll be using, since these are textured paintings, I'll tell you right now -- a lot!

Now, the Marriott is one of my wife and my favorite hotels (especially the Courtyard brand), and has over 3,000 properties worldwide, so this is a great commission! The other plus is that their logo and brand color is crimson, which is one of my favorite colors!

I'll keep you posted with updates to the process, and maybe some pics as well!

This new painting is an oil painting that was completed with a palette knife, and lots of paint! It's an overhead view of a koi pond with several koi swishing around. This is a large painting, measuring 30x30 inches, with a .75 inch depth.

As you know, I have a thing for movement, and of course I wanted to express it in this painting. Probably the most movement shown is in the middle-bottom of the painting, where you see a koi tail almost as a blur. What I like about koi is their golden color, which is a great contrast to the blue/greens of the water.

I finished this yesterday, and because of the heavy texture, the painting will take approximately 3-5 weeks to dry before I can ship it out.

I love painting this type of textured oil painting! The only drawback is the drying time (3-5 weeks), but you know what? Before you know it, the time has flown by, and it's ready to ship! Amazing! (maybe it's just me - LOL!)

Egyptian Burial Tomb Wall

My completed reproduction of an Egyptian Burial tomb wall

This was one of my large-scale projects: (somewhat) replicating a wall from an egyptian burial tomb. This project was done some years ago, and I'm glad to see that the original exhibition is still at the museum...

The original wall is in New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue at 82 St. I took reference photos (sans flash) of one of the walls, and of the reference diagram, shown below:

I also measured the wall's dimensions, and proceeded to reduce the scale somewhat, so as to fit the wall at the reproduction site:

In the photos above, you can see that I have already chalked the wall where each block will go. I used styrofoam panels to create a raised surface, which was then carved by hand to create the hieroglyphics and images. Finally, two coats of acrylic were used to seal the entire project!
