Casino magnate Steve Wynn pokes hole in $139 Million Picasso!

Pablo Picasso, Le Reve (The Dream), 1932

At first I thought it was a joke: the news about Las Vegas casino owner Steve Wynn accidentally poking a hole into Picasso's famous 'Le Reve' with his elbow, of all things!

But, sure enough, the story turned out to be true! As *Nora Ephron (one of the eyewitnesses to the event, and ) described the event in her blog, Steve was showing off the painting one last time after he sold it for 139 million dollars to a Connecticut billionaire friend of his. Though the accident happened several weeks ago, Nora kept it to herself until someone else leaked the story to the New York Post. She then went public with her account in her blog on Oct 16, 2006.

Needless to say, the sale is off, and the painting is in the shop for repairs. I offered my help in case the restoration proves to be less than satisfactory.

I know about such repairs, because I've accidentally poked holes in some of my own finished works. As it turns out, it's always a good thing, because it gives me an excuse to actually keep some of my own paintings!

I simply cannot find enough hours in the day to paint as much as I would like to. I'm always so busy creating new pieces for sale and commissioned works, that I don't actually get to keep many of my own paintings... Hmm.. I've even thought of trying Leonardo DaVinci's technique of power-napping throughout the day. When I do, I'll let you know how the experiment turns out.

*Nora Ephron - has received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay for "When Harry Met Sally," "Silkwood," and "Sleepless in Seattle," which she also directed. She lives in New York City with her husband, writer Nicholas Pileggi.
